Navy Judge Advocate Women’s Association

The Navy Judge Advocate Women’s Association commissioned a logo for their organization following admission to the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations. There were no specific parameters given to me for its creation.

The organization represents the collective of female active duty attorneys in the Department of the Navy, and is a resource for professional development. As a former Navy Judge Advocate, I am an inactive member of the organization, so I was personally invested in the creation of what would represent us to others across many platforms as well as throughout the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corp.

To create this branding, drew on the millrind we wear on our uniforms to identify us as Judge Advocates, which is an old form of scale for weighing grain, representing our scales of justice, and the traditional women’s “bucket” cover which at the time I created this branding had been banned for wear but has since made a resurgence thanks to Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first female to ever hold the position of Chief of Naval Operations. With the lettering, I emulated, but did not want to imitate the blue and gold N* of the U.S. Naval Academy, from which many officers (though not most Judge Advocates) graduate.

Designing for literal superheroes.
